Nutrigenetics: Nutrition

Nutrigenetics and nutritionNutrition is considered by scientists to be among the most profound of all the environmental factors which interact with our individual genetics. Nutrition begins at birth, continues throughout life, and is inescapable.

Nutrigenetics – the interaction between nutrition/diet and our individual genetics – is a two-way street: our diets can affect the degree to which our genes perform (called gene expression), and in turn, our genes can affect our dietary needs.

Examples of nutrients or foods which have been studied in connection with our genetics include: folate/folic acid (one of the B-complex vitamins), iron, vitamin B-12 (cobalamin), omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamin B-6, green tea, selenium, vitamin E, vitamin D, cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and cabbage), and many others.

Below are just a few examples of recent articles which touch on nutrition. Members can stay abreast of new research on topics of special interest to themselves, family members, or colleagues.  Join us today.
